'Pressing' Exercises

With my U16 Rochester club team, a big learning focus and staple of how we play revolves around how and when to pressurize the other team. Here are two very useful drills that I've ran with my team and got a lot out them.

Just a few coaching reminders about pressing:

1.) We try to win the ball back in first 6 seconds. Disrupt their ability to be effective in transition.

2.) Closest defender to ball always is the one to apply immediate pressure. However, as a team you must 'hunt' in packs. It is useless for one guy to press and no one else help because if he gets beat or played out with a pass then it was just wasted energy. The 'hunting group' must communicate effectively together and force play to one side...that is what these drills really focus on here!

3.) If you can’t win the ball in 6 seconds, regroup, reorganize, and then keep shape
